    实验动物垫料 (Laboratoryanimalbedding)是影响实验动物健康和动物实验结果的国际公认的重要环境因素之一 ,我国大多数实验动物生产和动物实验研究单位使用的垫料是来源不清楚的刨花 (Shaving)和锯屑 (Saw dust) ,质量得不到保证。国家实验动物管理机构和科研单位至今尚未开展实验动物垫料质量评估体系的研究 ,没有可以参考的标准。本文回顾了实验动物垫料研究的历史和进展 ,从不同角度分析了垫料原材料来源、原材料安全性、垫料舒适性、吸收性、形状、大小以及垫料的加工、灭菌、包装、运输和储存等 ,讨论并提出了适合中国国情的实验动物垫料开发、研究思路和质量评估办法

    Abstract:

    Laboratory animal bedding should provide a surface that is hygienic and that fulfils both physical and chemical requirements essential to the health and well being of the animals. It should be chosen in view of its absorbent capacity, its availability and low dust content. Wood appears to be the most suitable raw material for laboratory animal bedding. Of the softwoods, pine and cedar are not usable because of their high resin content of toxic substances for laboratory animal. Scientists demonstrated some changes in microsomal oxidative enzyme activity and other damages in the mouse and rat depending on the bedding. Aspen, birch, fir, and spruce seem to be good sources, as well as corncob and recycled paper. Based on preference testing, the size and the shape might be the major factors in the suitability of bedding particles for laboratory rodent animals. Bedding consisting of large fibers seems to be preferred. Sterilization is recommended. The paper reviews the history and development in criteria of biological evaluation of laboratory animal bedding, with author's opinion about rodent laboratory animal bedding in China.
