Objective To investigate the anesthetic effect of sumianxin in combination with pentobarbital in dog experiments. Methods Sixty healthy dogs were included in the present study, mules and females together. The anesthetics were administered intramuscularly. Results The anethesia induction time was 6 minutes in average. The anesthesia time lasted at least 270 minutes. Although sumianxin anethesia revealed well response for sedation, analgesia, as well as muscular relaxation, the combined use of pentobarbital in a half of its recommended dosage made a better anesthetization showing prolonged and stable anesthesia, with quick and smooth resuscitation. Conclusion Sumianxin combined with pentobarbital anethesia appears to be a satisfactory method for dogs during prolonged operation.
