Abstract:Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory complex pathogenesis, there are currently no effective treatments available. Abnormal epigenetic modifications are closely associated with AD onset and progression of AD. Histone methylation is an important epigenetic modification that participates in AD pathology by dynamically regulating chromatin structure and gene transcription; it plays an important regulatory role in Aβ plaque formation, tau hyperphosphorylation, neuroinflammation, synaptic plasticity,and neuronal death. Traditional Chinese medicine has unique advantages for AD prevention and treatment; its active ingredients can regulate histone methylation to improve AD, mainly through reducing the production of Aβ and highly phosphorylated tau to alleviate neuroinflammatory responses, repair synaptic plasticity damage, and increase neuronal survival. This paper reviews the key role of histone methylation in AD and current research on traditional Chinese medicine interventions, providing a theoretical basis for the clinical treatment of AD and the research, development,and application of traditional Chinese medicine.
