Abstract:Experimental animals are essential vehicles for scientific research and a vital pillar supporting the advancement and continuity of life science studies. The establishment and operation of a veterinary team within an experimental animal center constitute a core safeguard system, ensuring the quality of experimental animals, the management of breeding processes, biosafety compliance, and the ethical welfare of the animals. To a significant extent, the veterinary team also plays a central role in guaranteeing the reliability of research data related to experimental animals and upholding their biological safety. This article examines the current state of veterinary team development in such centers, identifies key existing challenges, and explores specialized, sustainable pathways for team building that align with the operational needs of experimental animal centers. Drawing on national policies, present conditions, and years of practical experience, we summarize and propose a multi-level framework and development strategy for constructing veterinary teams in university-based experimental animal centers—one that meets the demands of modern scientific research. The objective is to build a high-level, professional veterinary service team with clearly defined responsibilities and sustainable development capacity, thereby better adapting to the requirements of high-quality scientific research and providing robust support for university development.
