Animal models of human disease play an essential role in supporting medical research and are the basic tool for medical research． The present paper summarized the function of animal models in medical research，as well as the contributions of animal models to the progress if medical research in history． Then，the application prospects of animal models in research frontier of medical innovation were previewed．
